An Overview of Special Education Law, 504, FERPA, and Issues Relevant for Pediatric Neuropsychologists

Journal of Pediatric Psychology.jpg

The article presents an overview of the basic legal framework for special education law and how records are handled at a school. It is important for neuropsychologists working with children and families to understand both the legal mechanisms by which children are able to access educational services as well as supplementary health services that may be available through the school. It is also important that neuropsychologists understand how records provided by schools may be handled so that they can better inform and coordinate with patients. We have organized the current information into strands related to school records, eligibility, and protection from discrimination. Pediatric neuropsychologists may find the concrete suggestions provided at the end of the article helpful when consulting with both families and the schools attended by the students.
