Now that you have identified your goal, it is important to identify what has to happen to close the gap between where you currently are and your goal. As shown in the picture to the right, there is often a missing piece. That missing piece is often a plan that focuses on an effective strategy.
"If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail"
--Benjamin Franklin
Once we decide what it is that we want (Set a goal), it seems logical to do some planning to decide how we are going to achieve our goal. This is an important step in the process of self-regulating that many students and even adults skip. Research shows that lower performing students compared to higher achieving students will spend less time planning before they begin working. Sometimes it is not best to just jump right into a task. "Look before you leap!" is one way to think about it.
Strategic planning is not just setting aside some time to plan before we get started. There are some important differences between just planning and an effective plan. Most of remember that Wiley Coyote's elaborate but ineffective plans.
Creating a Good Plan
-
Select a strategy that is proven to work
-
DON'T launch yourself across the desert on a rocket!!
We provide a list of some potential strategies to consider next! -
Change takes time
-
As noted before, these kinds of changes take time for any child, just like losing weight or organizing your own finances does not happen all at once for us as adults.
-
Each Child Is Unique (One Size Does Not Fit All)
-
Use your supports
Some children will need more than a book, a website, or assistance from school staff can provide. If your child has persistent issues with executive function despite quality attempts at intervention, consider referring your child to the Student Support Team at school or to a specialist in private practice.
